Assistant Highlights: July 2024

By Regan Lavin, TV Lit Assistant, UTA & Artistic Curator, The Hollywood Assistant

It’s officially summer! As temperatures rise outside, hopefully (fingers crossed) things are a little cooler and more chill in your corner of the industry. If you’re especially lucky (like me) maybe you even have an entire week off for July 4th . Keep on reading for our latest sizzling hot assistant highlights.

I’m Regan, our new Artistic Curator, and I put together this list each month. Projects include (but are not limited to) short films, scripts, plays, creative salons, stand-up shows, podcasts, band performances, improv, EP drops, and more! Have a project you want to have highlighted? Submit HERE!

The Lot1 Podcast

by Mina Vazirian (TV Studio Assistant)

The Lot1 Podcast is designed for people starting out in the industry or those who want to learn about other positions. Each week, we interview guests to provide our listeners with the knowledge they need to learn more about a given role or how to get started in one. S2 will release in July 2024 with our outstanding roster of guests of union professionals, studio executives, and more!

Vazirian currently works at a TV studio as an assistant and produces her podcast at night. Her two co-hosts similarly work in the industry in junior roles. They all work hard to carve out a set time each week to get together and make the podcast happen. While it’s hard to balance everything, since the podcast is their creative outlet, they make it work!

The Hall Pass

by Marc Brockwell (Showrunner's Assistant, CBS)

As a lover of slice of life comedy, I set out to make a grounded, realistic tale of vulnerable bro-ey insecurity when a guy believes his girlfriend is cheating on him after she reveals her "hall pass" would be with her (much) more buff yoga teacher. A totally random and fictional story and definitely not based on anything that ever happened in real life… but more importantly, I just wanted to make something fun and light with my friends.

Click HERE for a link to their IMDB page. There will be a screening on Wednesday, July 10th. The film is currently unlisted due to festival submission status. RSVP to the screening HERE.

LA Screening Information:

The Broadwater

Second Stage

6320 Santa Monica Blvd

Los Angeles, CA 90038

Brockwell works as the Showrunner’s Assistant on the CBS multi-cam comedy, THE NEIGHBORHOOD. He balanced making his short with his day job by writing and doing all the pre-production work before/after-hours and then shooting the film over a weekend. Brockwell notes that while it was definitely an undertaking to do this while working full time, it was such a rewarding experience and an incredible lesson in how to balance it all.
